Abstract

The progress and failure of every country do not only depend on the leadership, but also are determined by the quality of the citizens. Political leaders more often than not focus on secularised education and down play Christian religious education which they feel has nothing to offer as far as the education of the citizens and national development are concerned. In a bid to separate Religion from Politics which is the brain child of secularization, government has ignored the role played by the Christian Religious Education in imparting morals and spirituality in the minds of the citizens which are foundational to the education of the citizens as well as national development. The paper attempted to examine the role played by Christian Religious Education in fostering education of the citizens with the aim of restoring the lost glory of Christian Religious education in the mainstream of educational sector in the country. In this research, Phenomenological Approach was used. The data collected were described and analyzed. The data were collected mainly through observation and books. It was discovered that Christian religious education has contributed a lot in training responsible citizens that have contributed to the overall development of this country. However, the neglect of Christian religious education by government has resulted in moral failure like bribery and corruption, unpatriotic spirit, selfish leadership, disloyalty and youth delinquencies.  The paper recommended that for sanity to be restored in all the sectors of society, Christian religious education should be given a pride of place in the Philosophy of Education and the school curriculum at all levels in this country.
