Abstract

Job satisfaction represents employees’ attitudes towards some important characteristics of jobs like, the work, its pay, promotion, opportunities, supervision and even colleagues on the job. Job satisfaction is an important measure of the performance of an organization.  Job satisfaction describes the extent an individual is pleased, comfortable or satisfied with his/her job. Every workers can improve in their work and make significant input in the work place for regular career development which  is closely related to the amount of knowledge they have for satisfaction.  Libraries have excelled at creating scholarly information and intelligence from data, but they have tended not to create knowledge from intelligence. Commitment for career is classified by the growth of individual career objectives, the connection, recognition with and participation in those objectives. Library personnel play pivotal roles within the higher education system; personnel work actively in any organisation where there is job satisfaction through several factors, incidentally, studies have however shown evidences of job dissatisfaction among librarians in Nigerian colleges of education. This paper outlines the concept of career development, concept of job satisfaction and career development of librarians. It equally reviewed major constraints facing career development of librarians in colleges of education in South-West, Nigeria. The Authors conclude by recommending amongst others that library management should formulate working policies on career development, policies like encouraging staff to attend computer training programmes, improve ICT skills and provide opportunities and facilities for professional development of librarians in order to enhance their job satisfaction.
