Abstract
The dwindling performance of secondary school students over the years have been of grave concern to researchers in recent times. This is in view of the efforts of the government at various levels of educational administration to encourage students and enhance their improved performance. The Oyo State government for example in the last five years has consistently picked up the bills of the Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations for its indigenes. This is amongst other efforts to boost the academic performance of the secondary school leavers in the state. However, these and several other efforts of government has yielded but little results as the performance of the students in the various O/L examinations has consistently been dismal. Previous studies attempting to address this precarious situation has albeit focused on the role of teachers in the performance of students. Few studies have attempted to look into the effect of school community governance on students’ performance despite the avalanche of evidence from literature regarding the connectivity of school community governance and students’ performance. The survey research design was adopted for the descriptive study. Thirty secondary schools out of fifty-three were sampled for the study. Three hundred and twenty five questionnaires were administered out of which 295 were returned correctly filled. The data generated was subjected to both non-parametric and parametric (after data transformation) analyses. SPSS version 23 was used to run Chi-Square, Correlational and Regression analyses of the data. The study finds that students’ performance is significantly impacted by school community governance with p-value of 0.000, Adjusted R2= 0.469, F change = 65.793. The study recommends policy intervention to strengthen the school community governance initiative in the interest of students’ performance.
