Factors Affecting School Connectedness of Secondary School Students in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State

Abstract

Developing School connectedness by positive relationships with peers and adults can be seen as viable school reform initiative to improve student achievement, Where it is lacking deviant behaviours, and weak  academic achievement and weak alumni association  after students graduated are possible outcome. Hence the focus of this  investigation on the factors related to school connectedness in Public Secondary schools in Ilishan Remo Ogun State. The study adopted  the survey research design.  Simple random sampling techniques was used in  the study. Structured questionnaire were used in data collection. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The finding on students personal factors showed that the students had a feeling of belongingness in school and liked  going to School. However, the students  generally disagreed that teachers really cared about them. Findings on school environment factors revealed that it is not conducive. The study revealed  that of all the personal factors only parental involvement revealed a  significant relationship with school connectedness. There was also significant relationship of environmental factors and school connectedness (β =.391; t =6.582; p < 0.05 ;R2= .486). School environmental factors and parental involvement (personal factor) affected school connectedness as they accounted  for 48.6% and 31.3% of the variation in school connectedness of senior secondary schools students respectively. It was concluded that some students’ personal factors and learning environmental factors affected school connectedness in the study area. The study recommended provision of conducive learning environment such as good and airy classrooms, well-equipped library and functional school facilities.
