Abstract

The subject of sex education has been extensively received several studies, since sexual violence is becoming a social ailing and issue particularly in the society. Sexual violence can be aimed at against a person using coercion, by any person regardless of their relationship to the victim, in any setting, it not limited to home and work both men and women. This paper therefore examined sex education as solution to prevalence of sexual violence among adolescents in Oyo State. Although the objective of this study was to adopt sex education in tackling sexual violence among Nigerian adolescents, the evidence has revealed that a wide range of sexually violent acts can take place in different circumstances and settings which include rape within marriage or dating relationships; rape by strangers; harassment; sexual abuse of children; forced abortion among others. Teaching about sexuality is significant in providing the knowledge about our bodies; debunk harmful stereotypes about sex, race, and gender; provide opportunities for us to think critically about our own values and relationships; and empower us to stand up for our rights and the rights of others to pleasure, bodily autonomy, and consent in order to reduce sexual violence and promoting morals and values in the society. The study recommends that society should get involved in spreading the knowledge on sex education. Also, public enlightenment and seminars can be organized for the young ones. Finally, parents, religious centers, government and non-government organization should endeavor to play their own roles in the society and nation at large.
