Abstract
The web is a digital medium children use for real-time interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok via their digital devices. Due to its risks (cyberbullying, online predators, and obscene content), parents take on the role of digital guardians by adopting online safety measures to protect their children on the web. This study investigated parental awareness and adoption of online safety measures for children in Lagos State, surveying 442 respondents. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, and Pearson Correlation indicated that parents are aware of online threats and employ measures such as setting Internet rules, screen limits, and engaging in discussions on Internet safety. Statistical analysis revealed that increased parental knowledge of online risks (r (442) = 0.180, p < 0.05) and increased parental awareness of online safety measures (r (442) = 0.512, p < 0.05) enhance the adoption of online safety measures. The study recommended campaigns and workshops for stakeholders to educate parents on advanced protection strategies. The web is a digital medium children use for real-time interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok via their digital devices.
