Abstract

This paper investigated the factors influencing students’ inability to complete their university education in South-West Nigeria using a cross-sectional survey design.  A sample of 192 students was selected through the multi-stage sampling technique. Instruments used for data collection were structured questionnaire that captured the objectives. Three hypotheses were formulated and tested by means of multiple regression analysis and Pearson’s r at the .05 level of significance. Results revealed significant combined influence of financial constraints, academic unpreparedness, poor study habits, lack of motivation, inadequate academic support and institutional issues on students' inability to complete their university education (F(6, 185) = 17.323, p < .05) and that Poor Study Habits (β = .236, t = 28.762, p < .05),  Financial Constraints (β = .219, t = 26.645, p < .05), Lack of Motivation (β = .195, t = 24.037, p < .05), Academic Unpreparedness (β = .187, t = 23.276, p < .05) and Inadequate Academic Support (β = .164, t = 21.824, p < .05) influenced students’ inability to complete their university education. It was subsequently recommended, among others, that universities should consider implementing programmes and initiatives that promote good study habits among students.
