Abstract

This paper studied the general attitude of the Babcock University community towards the observing propriety regard reproduction of copyrighted publications. Whereas every properly published book contains a copyright notice which is also clearly worded, more often than not this notice is treated with levity by the users of such publications. The experience at Babcock University is not too different. In light of this, the paper sought to find out the trends and perceptions of the university community regarding the issue of reprography. The theoretical framework that guided this study is the symbolic interaction theory. The study adopted the survey research method of interviews and focus group discussion. Eleven staff and faculty members of the university community, and five providers of reprographic services on campus were interviewed while 15 students participated in focus group discussion. Presentation and findings were done in a narrative manner following the qualitative research method adopted. Major findings include a low level of awareness on reprographic requirements and indifference in attitude. The study recommended the introduction of media literacy education in the curriculum of Nigerian university as well entrenchment of the culture of publication acquisition for personal library.
