Abstract

Every nation of the world is striving to improve their economy from being a value adding economy to value creating economy in way that they cannot only produce goods and service that other nations can produce but produce goods and services that other nation cannot produce with hope of surviving among numerous competitors among nations of the world. The way forward to such intention of any government is entrepreneurship. Therefore this study investigated business management skills as a correlate of entrepreneurship engagement among government technical colleges students in Oyo State, Nigeria. This study adopted the survey research design of correlational type. Population for this study consisted of all technical colleges students in Oyo State. All Government Technical Colleges in Oyo State were selected in Oyo State, that is, technical college in Ibadan, Iseyin and Oyo. Year Two technical college students were selected for this study from each of selected college due to the fact that those students at this level are not preparing for any external examination. A total number of 294 students were participated in this study, that is, 105 in Ibadan, 92 in Iseyin and in Oyo 97. There were two instruments used for this study which are Technical Students’ Business Management Skills Scale (0.72)(TSBMSS) and Technical Students’ Entrepreneurship Engagement Scale (0.74)(TSEES). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment Correlation at 0.05 level of significance. The result of this study revealed that there was a positive significant relationship between technical students business management skills and technical students’ entrepreneurship engagement among government technical colleges students (r=0.124, df=198, p<0.05). It is therefore recommended that technical colleges’ curriculum must promote management skills in there will be need for each of the technical college student to engage in entrepreneurship.
