Abstract
The banking industry is characterized by high job demands and intense work pressure, which can adversely affect employees’ level of engagement. In Akwa Ibom State, deposit money banks are increasingly confronted with challenges such as job stress and high turnover intention among employees. However, there is limited research examining how these factors influence work engagement in this sector. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of turnover intention and job stress on work engagement in selected deposit money banks in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.A survey research design was used, where primary data were obtained through a structured questionnaire. A sample of 286 respondents was drawn from a population of 1,111 bank employees in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria using the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) sample size determination formula. The findings revealed that turnover intention and job stress, both independently and jointly, have a significant negative impact on work engagement in deposit money banks in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.Therefore, the study concluded that turnover intention and job stress exert a statistically significant negative influence on employees’ work engagement in deposit money banks in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.Thus, recommended, among other things, that the management of deposit money bank in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria establish clear retention policies to promote employee engagement.
