Abstract

This paper investigates the influence of urban migration on Abuja’s economic development between 1991 and 2022. It adopted a historical perspective to clarify how migration both fueled growth in construction, commerce, and public administration and introduced significant challenges, such as traffic congestion, crime, and housing shortages. By analyzing historical accounts, government documents, and resident interviews, the study revealed that migration both provided essential labor and strained public services. Despite these challenges, Abuja grew into an economic hub, underscoring the transformative yet complex role of migration. The study situates Abuja’s growth within Nigeria’s broader urbanization and emphasizes the need for effective urban management. It concludes that while migration was key to Abuja’s rise, sustainable policies are essential to address ongoing challenges.
