Beyond the Doctor’s Prescription: A Medico-Social Perspective

Abstract

The human body operates like a machine that occasionally breaks down and requires the expertise of a skilled professional to get fixed. However, the treatment provided by a physician might not adequately address the underlying issues and the consequences of the ailment thus leaving the individual with significant unmet psychosocial needs. In order to over to address these problems, the medical social worker tries to meet the emotional and psychosocial needs that prescription medications cannot. This medico social discourse sheds light on what goes beyond the doctor’s prescription as well as the theoretical underpinnings, from the perspective of a social scientist in the clinical setting.
