Abstract

Reading and proofreading are brain-stimulating activities which are inevitable in teaching and learning activities. Despite the fact that students have been engaged in reading and proofreading activities, most of them still encounter challenges in some techniques needed to read   and proofread efficiently. Hence, this study was mapped out to explore into challenges some students encounter in reading skills and proofreading techniques expected of them in their academic pursuits. Some sets of questionnaires on reading, reading techniques and proofreading skills were distributed to students/respondents for this study to explore the areas of need in the knowledge expected of them to master in reading, reading technique and proofreading. The findings of the study revealed that students have low level of knowledge in reading technique and proofreading skills. Some of them stated that they have challenge of recalling what they read. They also submitted that they do not jot difficult words down as they read etc thereby falling short of the reading techniques required of them.  Also, most of the students do not pay attention to wrong registers, wrong usage of tenses among others.  However some of the students understood the importance of reading generally but lack the required technique and proofreading skills.  So they still need the assistance of teachers in having the required techniques in reading and proofreading skills.  In conclusion, having knowledge of reading techniques and proofreading skills are still challenges to most students.
