Abstract

Importance of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in educational system cannot be over-emphasized. Despite Federal Government of Nigeria’s policy on integration of ICT in schools, poor integration of ICT into teaching and learning in Senior Secondary Schools (SSSs) in the country is worrisome. This study examined utilization of ICT for teaching on students’ academic performance in selected SSSs in Nigeria.

Quantitative descriptive survey design with purposive sampling method was employed. Sample size was 14 biology teachers and 955 students. Questionnaire and checklist were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square test. Level of significance was set at p ≥ 0.5.

Findings revealed that very few teachers (14.3%) utilize ICT facilities for teaching. Majority (81.6%) of students in selected private SSSs performed better in Biology than their counterparts (33.3%) in selected public SSSs in first-term examination 2020/2021 academic session.  Chi-Square analysis revealed that there was no significant relationship (p = 0.000) between teachers’ utilization of ICT facilities for teaching and students’ academic performance.

Utilization of ICT facilities for teaching in selected SSSs was inadequate. Governments at all levels in the country must ensure adequate integration of ICT in secondary school education in line with international best practices.
