Abstract
Background: Compliance with the use of personal protective equipment is crucial for the reduction of the rates of injuries and deaths in the building construction sector Several factors have been stated to influence the none use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among workers in building construction industries. This research aim is to assess the level of information (knowledge on occupational hazards and PPE use) and the adherence to PPE use among construction site employees in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study. The multi-stage sampling technique was used. A validated structured interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 260 participants. The Levels of information and Utilization of PPE were measured on 13-point and 15-point rating scales respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics; hypotheses were tested at a 5% level of significance. Results: The results showed the mean age of the participants was 29.06 7.54. The mean scores of participants were 7.75 2.99 and 7.03 3.26 for levels of information and adherence utilization of PPE respectively. The relationship between and utilization of personal protective equipment (r = 0.544, r2=0.296, p < 0.05). Conclusion: In Conclusion, the participants had average levels of utilization of PPE. This implies that there is a need for the workers to be well informed regarding hazards, uses, and benefits of PPE and sustained policies to increase the utilization of PPE while enhancing their productivity at work.
