Abstract
This study examined the socio-economic characteristics of informal sector activity (ICA) operators in the residential neighbourhoods of the Lagos metropolis. Data were collected through personal observations, interviews, and the administration of a questionnaire. 1,345 copies of the questionnaire were administered to ICA entrepreneurs across 52 administrative wards in 16 local government areas in Lagos metropolis using multi-stage and disproportionate sampling techniques. Out of these, 973 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved, representing a response rate of 73.9%. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tools to interpret and discuss the findings. The results indicated that most operators are adults with diverse income levels, predominantly engaged as retailers. In low-, medium- and high-density residential areas, 60%, 77%, and 76.4% of the operators, respectively, relied solely on the informal sector, while the remaining participants used it as a supplementary source of income. The study recommended implementing targeted programs to stimulate the growth of the ICA sector and facilitate its integration into the formal economic system.
