Abstract

Effective performance management is essential to ensure that a business is operating effectively and is on track to achieve strategic goals. Thus, this study assessed the performance appraisal system and organizational performance in selected potable water packaging industries in Remo, Ogun State, Nigeria. A survey research design was adopted. The study population consisted of one thousand nine hundred and fifty (1950) employees working in the potable water industries in Remo Administrative Block in Ogun State, Nigeria. The research instrument used was a questionnaire titled “Performance appraisal and Organizational Performance Questionnaire”. Data was analysed using multiple regression analysis fixed at 0.05 confidence level. The study showed confidential appraisal statistically predicted organizations’ sales return (F calculated(1, 394) = 8.523 > f-table = 3.86; p <.05); semi-open appraisal statistically predicted organizations’ market share (F-calculated(1, 394) = 41.107> f-table = 3.86 p <.05); while open appraisal statistically did not predict organizations’ profit (F-calculated(1, 394) = 2.151 < f-table = 3.86 p <.05). The study concluded that for portable water industries to achieve good performance in terms of market share, profit, and sales return, adequate attention should be paid to the performance appraisal system. The study however, recommended that the managements in banking sector should reduce the work load on bank employees and also modify the organisation structure to enhance employees’ health and performance.
