The Role of University-Based Entrepreneurship Education in Achieving SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) in Nigeria

Abstract

The phenomenon of decent work has become a top priority
problem before the International Labour Organization and the
governmentsofmembernations.TheUnitedNationsSustainable
Development Goal (SDG)-8 focuses on decent work, economic
growth, youth empowerment, and employment generation.
There are several studies on mechanisms and strategies for
attaining economic growth; however, there is a paucity of
literature on the effect of University-based Entrepreneurship
education on decent work and economic growth. This study,
therefore, examined the role of University-based
entrepreneurship education in achieving SDG-8 in selected
universities in Lagos State, Nigeria. The study adopted a survey
design.Thepopulationofthestudywas36,774studentsfromtwo
selecteduniversitiesinLagosState.Asampleof456studentswas
selected from both universities using Cochran's formula.
Inferentialstatistics was employed in analysis of data. The study
found that University-based Entrepreneurship education has
significant effect on decentwork inNigeria (â=0. 49,t=11.58, p
< 0.05). University-based Entrepreneurship education has
significant effect on youth empowermentinNigeria (â=0.59,t=
11.58, p < 0.05). The study concluded that UECs enhanced the
attainment of SDG-8 (decent work and economic growth in
Nigeria. The study recommended that government ensure
adequatefundingofentrepreneurshipeducationinNigeria.
