Understanding the world and its conflicts: Some theoretical approaches

Abstract

This paper seeks to connect theory and the practice of everyday life as it relates to the world and its conflicts. From
the theoretical understanding of the connectedness of global events, it examined the causation and trajectory of the British
Southern Cameroons' conflict, discussed the theories that offer potential options for constructively transforming the
conflict, and reflected on possible resolution of the conflict. The paper argues that since conflict is not only about interests
alone, socializing or coercing the people of the British Southern Cameroons, aka Ambazonia, will not provide a
solution to the conflict. Considering that conflict theory and practice show that a protracted conflict like the British
Southern Cameroons' restoration of independence and statehood conflict situation is over non-negotiable human
needs, such conflicts cannot be resolved by socializing and/or coercing the people into behavior that goes counter to their
needs. The paper concluded that students of social research should become critically conscious of the socio-historical
world in which they intervene because such a critical reading of the world allows them to make linkages and comparisons,
arrive at conclusions, and speak in relation to the world, both theoretically and practically.
