Abstract
Several years after the inception of democratic dispensation
in Nigeria, the political landscape is yet to show clear
evidence of good governance due to lack of political interest
and political participation of the masses in government
activities. This study investigated the impact of political
participation on democratic consolidation in Nigeria using
Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study
adopted survey research design, while stratified random
sampling method was applied in selecting the respondents.
The sample of 160 participants was selected from four
communities in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State,
Nigeria. Validated questionnaire was the instrument of data
collection. The data were analysed using Chi-square
statistical tools and percentage analysis was used to analyse
the demographic data of the respondents. The study found
that there is significant level of political participation in the
study area; there are significant factors influencing political
participation in the study area and there is significant impact
of political participation on democratic consolidation in
Nigeria.. The study concluded that any meaningful change in
Nigeria will begin with high commitment of the people to
democratic ideals, rules and participation. The study
recommended that there is need for change in the value
orientation of the political elites and the Nigerians.
