Organizational Performance of Book Publishing Firms: The Role of Technological Innovations

Abstract

Research revealed that organizational performance of book publishing firms is on the decline aggravating illiteracy challenges. Literature abound on marketing variables as predictors of organizational performance, but little appears to have been done in considering book publishing firms’ performance. The study investigated the role of technological innovation on organizational performance of book publishing firms in Ibadan, Oyo State. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Population consisted of 204 management staff of the 51 registered book publishing firms in Ibadan metropolis, using total enumeration sampling technique. A validated questionnaire was used for data collection. A response rate of 77% was achieved. Findings revealed that there was a significant relationship between technological innovation and organizational performance (r = .803, p < 0.01). Organizational performance with respect to financial perspective was low (Mean = 4.86), customer and internal perspective was low (Mean = 4.91), learning and growth perspective also recorded low performance (Mean = 4.82). It was recommended that executives in book publishing firms should adopt product and process technological innovations that can improve the quality of their products. Book publishing firms should train their employee to be innovative in their approach.
