Abstract

The establishment of local government is anchored on the
philosophy of bringing efficient government to the people at
the grassroots. However, this paper brought to light the long
term effects of poverty and inefficiency in local government
Service and its implications for Sustainable Development.
The paper subsequently found out that one of the causes of
poverty and inefficiency in local government service was the
pervasive ignorance of the grassroots people. This paper
therefore suggested that there is need for the state government
to engage in more political education and enlightenment for
the grassroots people on the responsibilities of the third tier of
government through public lectures, town hall meetings and
symposia since it is apparent that a lot of the local people are
oblivious of the functions of local government thus giving
avenue for the politicians to capitalize on this mass ignorance
by not only patronizing the people but rendering poor
services to them.
